Numerous regulatory and sustainability updates are affecting modelled Landfill greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The panel will discuss 2024 amendments to GHG Reporting for Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Landfills, highlighting revisions to modelling for methane generation, including Degradable Organic Carbon Content of MSW and first order decay rates. We will discuss the Solid Waste Industry for Climate Solutions (SWICS) Landfill Emissions Model (LEM) that industry uses for sustainability reporting, comparing collection efficiencies for landfill gas collection systems based on cover types (daily, intermediate, and final) for GHG Reporting and SWICS. We will summarize recent AP-42 revisions for Landfills, and the latest LandGEM Model for methane generation. We will present recent changes to federal air regulations at landfills, alongside current and future scenarios for Landfill emissions and methane generation. Plus, diving into the accuracy of Carbon Mapper and satellite technologies, and their use in decision making.
