Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, are a widely used class of chemicals found in a variety of consumer and industrial products. PFAS are persistent in the environment and are exceptionally hard to study due to the number of potential species and chemical diversity. PFAS have been measured in vast environmental matrices, in food, and in very remote locations and some are regulated due to their potential harmful health effects in humans and animals.
Concerns around PFAS are widespread. This panel will provide an overview of the science surrounding PFAS in the context of air and waste, which are growing in the regulatory space. This panel is geared towards students and young professionals. Topics will include:
• Overview of PFAS in the environment
• The science of PFAS in air and waste
• PFAS regulations in air and waste
• Future of PFAS regulations and research
