Abstract Description: Air monitoring is crucial for the success of brownfield redevelopment. As compliance continues to increase and new contaminants of concern are identified, communities demand more information. How do we address these issues while limiting project risk, cost, and complexity?
We explore the challenges of implementing community air monitoring at a brownfield site contaminated with mercury, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), petroleum-related volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and heavy metals, which could pose risks to nearby sensitive receptors. Through a case study, we present a solution for real-time monitoring of mercury vapor, VOCs, particulate matter (PM10), and wind at the site perimeter and in the community. We demonstrate how sensor technology and cloud automation advances can save project time and costs while meeting compliance requirements and addressing community concerns.
